The Math Behind Your Chart

Every person's birth chart is unique, but some combinations of Sun, Moon, and Rising signs are more statistically common than others. This tool calculates how often your specific Big Three combination occurs in the general population.

Why Signs Aren't Equally Common

You might assume each of the 12 zodiac signs accounts for exactly 1/12 of the population, but that's not quite true. The Sun moves faster through some signs than others because Earth's orbit is slightly elliptical. Rising signs are even more unequal — signs near the solstice points take longer to cross the horizon, making them more common ascendants.

How Many Combinations Exist?

With 12 possible Sun signs, 12 possible Moon signs, and 12 possible Rising signs, there are 12 × 12 × 12 = 1,728 possible Big Three combinations. If the distribution were perfectly even, each combo would represent about 0.058% of the population. But because the distribution is uneven, some combos are twice as common as others.

Beyond the Big Three

Your full birth chart includes Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the outer planets, plus 12 houses and dozens of aspects. When you factor in all of these, every birth chart is essentially one of a kind. The Big Three rarity score is a fun starting point, but your complete chart is far more nuanced.
